Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is yet to formally complete his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), days after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a close source has disclosed.
The delay, according to the source, is deliberate as the former Vice President is said to be planning to personally carry out the registration rather than delegating the process.
Speaking in confidence in Abuja, the source stated that Atiku’s recent international engagements and travel schedule contributed to the delay.
“He returned to Nigeria briefly for the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura after a business trip abroad. From Daura, he travelled out again for a two-week break,” the source said.
The source further explained that Atiku, being a high-profile political figure, understands the need to be physically present when joining a new party.
“For someone like His Excellency, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, it is important that people see him physically picking up his membership card and completing the formal process. It is a move that carries both political and symbolic weight,” the source added.
According to the source, the former Vice President intends to time his registration for maximum media attention and political impact, especially with preparations already gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 general election.
Although the exact date remains unconfirmed, the source stressed that the move is imminent and would mark a major development in opposition politics.
“Once he returns from his vacation, one of his first major tasks will be to complete his registration with the ADC,” the source said.
