FAAN Arrests Four Suspected Bandits Near Akure Airport

The suspects were apprehended near the Eleyewo area in Akure North Local Government Area after security agencies received intelligence about suspicious activities close to the airport environment.

The development comes amid growing security concerns in nearby Ilu-Abo community where residents have recently reported several cases of kidnapping and violent attacks.

Local sources said at least 10 abduction incidents have been recorded in the axis within the last two months, prompting protests by residents who demanded urgent intervention from government and security agencies.

FAAN explained that the suspects were arrested after a distress alert was received indicating that some unidentified persons had been sighted behind the airport perimeter towards the Eleyewo community.

In a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of the authority, Henry Agbebire, security operatives immediately began a coordinated search operation in the area.

He said the operation involved several security agencies including FAAN’s Aviation Security unit, the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force, alongside other local security groups.

According to the statement, some individuals attempted to escape during the operation but four of them were eventually captured by the joint security team.

The arrested suspects have since been handed over to the Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and interrogation.

FAAN praised the cooperation among aviation security personnel, the military, the police and local security outfits such as the Amotekun Corps and community vigilantes whose combined efforts led to the successful arrests.

The authority said the incident highlights the need for stronger security measures around airport perimeters across the country.

It also disclosed that the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development with the backing of the administration of President Bola Tinubu, is improving security infrastructure at airports nationwide.

According to FAAN, phased work has already begun to provide modern perimeter fencing and enhanced protection systems at airports under its management.

The authority, however, assured travellers and host communities that it remains committed to safeguarding all airport facilities across Nigeria.
