Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to various countries and international missions across the world.
The development was disclosed on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who stated that the list includes 31 political appointees and 34 career diplomats.
According to him, the envoys had earlier been cleared by the Nigerian Senate in December 2025 after undergoing screening conducted by the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
He added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Nigeria) has been directed to immediately organise an induction programme for the diplomats before they proceed to their respective duty stations.
The presidential aide explained that the ambassadors would formally assume their responsibilities once their host countries grant diplomatic approval known as agrément.
Among the political appointees assigned to diplomatic missions are Grace Bent to Togo, Ita Enang to South Africa, Mahmud Yakubu to Qatar, and Jimoh Ibrahim who will serve as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Others include Reno Omokri to Mexico, Femi Fani-Kayode to Germany, Lateef Kayode Are to the United States and Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau to China.
Also listed among the non-career ambassadors are Fatima Florence Ajimobi to Austria, Lola Akande to Sweden and Isaac Folorunso Adewole to Canada.
Career diplomats were equally posted to several countries including Côte d’Ivoire, Niger, Egypt, Italy, Morocco, Kenya, Belgium and Thailand.
Onanuga further disclosed that two countries have already issued diplomatic approval for Nigeria’s envoys. He said the United Kingdom granted agrément to High Commissioner-designate Aminu Dalhatu, while France approved the posting of Ambassador Ayodele Oke.
He noted that requests for approval for the remaining envoys have been forwarded to their respective host nations and responses are being awaited.
