Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Returns to APC, Cites Alignment with FG

Yusuf announced his defection on Monday at the Coronation Hall of the Kano Government House, where he was formally received by senior APC leaders, including former party National Chairman and immediate past Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, and Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata.

Speaking at the event, the governor said his return to the APC was driven by the need to work more closely with the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu, stressing that leadership decisions must prioritise public interest over personal comfort or sentiment.

Yusuf disclosed that the move was taken after wide consultations and was collectively agreed upon by key political stakeholders in the state, including members of his cabinet, 22 out of 24 lawmakers in the Kano State House of Assembly, and all 44 local government chairmen.

He explained that aligning Kano with the ruling party at the centre would support the implementation of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and accelerate development across the state, adding that the decision was not motivated by personal ambition or political rivalry.

The governor said the defection would help end confrontational politics and foster peace, unity and progress in Kano, noting that governance should be guided by responsibility and service rather than political division.

Yusuf also assured residents that his administration would remain inclusive, stressing that the move would not diminish the contributions of those who supported his emergence as governor.

Earlier, the APC Chairman in Kano State, Abdullahi Abbas, described the governor’s return as being in the best interest of the state and pledged the party’s full support for Yusuf’s administration, assuring readiness to work with the Federal Government to deliver development.

Yusuf was elected governor in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) before defecting to the APC alongside several political stakeholders in the state.
