The World Bank has approved the construction of a modern abattoir in Ado-Ekiti under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project.
Ekiti State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ forum held in Ado-Ekiti. He said the initiative aims to improve the livestock value chain, promote food safety, and boost the state’s economy.
According to him, the new abattoir, to be sited along Iworoko Road in the state capital, will be a dual-purpose facility equipped with modern meat-processing technology, cold storage units, and a robust waste management system.
Boluwade added that the facility will comply with strict hygiene and sanitation standards, ensuring all operations meet regulatory requirements to guarantee safe meat for public consumption.
Also speaking at the event, the State Project Coordinator for L-PRES, Mr. Olayinka Adedipe, said the project also includes the development of a comprehensive agribusiness hub in the state.
He explained that the hub will serve as a one-stop centre for farmers, processors, and other stakeholders, providing access to finance, markets, and modern agricultural technologies.
Adedipe noted that the project is expected to create new economic opportunities and improve the livelihoods of livestock farmers across the state.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Ekiti State Government to the full implementation of the project, adding that Governor Biodun Oyebanji remains focused on promoting agriculture under his Shared Prosperity agenda.
The Project Coordinator also expressed appreciation to the Governor for his continuous support and leadership on the L-PRES initiative.
Adedipe further assured that the procurement process for the construction of the abattoir will follow World Bank guidelines strictly. He added that the state government will soon call for bids from qualified contractors to begin work on the project.
