The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has hinted that the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State may not be extended beyond its current expiration.
Speaking during a media chat in Abuja, Wike revealed that President Bola Tinubu has issued a new directive mandating the conduct of local government elections in Rivers State within 30 days.
According to him, the President is not in support of prolonging the emergency administration, which was instituted to restore order after a wave of political violence.
“The President, from my understanding, does not want the emergency rule extended because doing so will not be palatable to the people,” Wike said.
He disclosed that a new regulation, signed by President Tinubu in July, replaces the earlier 360-day emergency framework and now requires the conduct of council polls within a month.
Wike further explained that the current state administrator, Vice Admiral (rtd) Ibok-Ete Ibas, has the authority to oversee the elections and ensure a smooth transition back to democratic governance at the local level.
President Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, following the eruption of political violence and widespread breakdown of law and order.
The move led to the dissolution of the elected local councils and the appointment of a military administrator to stabilise the state.
With the new directive, the focus has now shifted to preparations for the council elections expected to take place within the stipulated time frame.
