The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election, stating he has no regrets backing him over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking during a New Year luncheon at his country home in Obio-Akpor on Friday, Wike criticized his opponents who, according to him, received money from Atiku to challenge him but ultimately failed.
“I have no regret supporting Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to win the election,” Wike declared. “Those making noise now are the same people who claimed Fubara could not be governor. Today, they are saying, ‘We are with you in 2027.’”
As the governor of Rivers State during the build-up to the 2023 elections, Wike chose to support Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing unresolved leadership issues within the PDP.
He criticized the party’s decision to allow both its presidential candidate and national chairman to emerge from the North, describing it as unfair and against the principle of equity.
Wike’s decision to back Tinubu instead of Atiku was a defining moment in the election and continues to draw reactions from political observers and stakeholders within the PDP.
