Wike Confirms End to Rivers Political Crisis, Says Peace Has Returned

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, have confirmed that the long-standing political crisis in Rivers State has come to an end.

The former Governor of Rivers State made this known to journalists shortly after a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He said all parties involved in the crisis, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara, have agreed to work together in unity.

“We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor also agreed to work together with all of us. We are members of the same political family,” Wike stated.

The FCT Minister acknowledged that the rift had dragged on for months, affecting governance and stability in the state. However, he expressed satisfaction that a final resolution has been reached.

“Yes, just like humans, you have a disagreement, and then you also have a time to settle your disagreement. That has been finally concluded today, and we have come to report to Mr. President what we have agreed. So for me, everything is over,” he added.

Wike called on all his supporters and political actors in Rivers State to remain calm and embrace peace, stressing that there is no more room for bitterness.

“I enjoin everybody who believes to work with us, to also work together with everybody. There’s no more acrimony. There’s nothing to say,” he said.

The crisis between Wike and his political godson, Governor Fubara, began shortly after the latter assumed office in May 2023. The conflict worsened in October when pro-Wike lawmakers initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor, leading to a series of events that plunged the state into political chaos.

President Tinubu had initially brokered a peace deal in December 2023, but tensions resurfaced, prompting the President to declare a state of emergency in March 2025. The emergency measure included the temporary suspension of Governor Fubara’s powers and the appointment of a sole administrator.

With Thursday’s truce, political observers hope the new agreement will bring lasting peace to Rivers State.
