A digital creator and long-time acquaintance of Olori Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II, Tade Makinwa, has explained why the monarch may not publicly defend her following the Ibadan Christmas stampede that claimed 35 children’s lives.
Makinwa, in a Facebook post on December 26, 2024, attributed the Ooni’s silence to the public manner in which the former queen dissolved their marriage, portraying him in a negative light.
Public Fallout of the Marriage
Makinwa noted that Olori Naomi’s online announcement of their separation was a key factor. “No man in a position of power,s influence, and success gets there by being weak. A woman who publicly disgraces such a man cannot expect his support during her time of need,” she wrote.
She emphasized that the Ooni’s role as a traditional ruler and deity-like figure in Yoruba culture makes public disrespect especially damaging. “To disrespect the Ooni on a global platform is to disrespect the Yoruba culture itself,” she added.
Palace Statement and Subtle Disassociation
The Palace of the Ooni of Ife recently issued a statement expressing sympathy to the affected families and acknowledging Naomi’s history of charitable efforts during her time as queen. However, Makinwa highlighted that the Palace referred to Naomi as “Miss Naomi Ogunseyi” for the first time, signaling public disassociation.
“When the Palace referred to her by her maiden name, it was a clear message: she is no longer part of the royal household and her issues are not the Palace’s responsibility,” Makinwa wrote.
Broader Cultural Context
Makinwa also criticized the decline in traditional values, attributing situations like this to cultural “decadence.” She compared Naomi’s actions to other controversies involving Yoruba royalty, such as the behavior of certain queens and the alleged affair between singer Portable and a widow of the Alaafin of Oyo.

Makinwa used the situation to caution against airing private matters on social media. She argued that such actions often have long-term consequences, especially when dealing with influential individuals.
“Social media is not the place to resolve deeply personal issues, particularly involving high-profile figures. There are bridges you don’t burn and moves you don’t make,” she concluded.
While expressing condolences, the Palace acknowledged Naomi’s past goodwill but maintained a neutral stance, emphasizing that she no longer represents the royal household.
