Former President Goodluck Jonathan has revealed that political turbulence during his tenure prevented the implementation of the 2014 National Conference recommendations.
Jonathan made this known on Sunday in Lagos while paying a condolence visit to the family of the late Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
He stated that despite public inquiries on why his administration did not act on the conference’s recommendations, the prevailing political climate at the time made it impossible. He cited internal party conflicts and efforts to undermine his government as key challenges.
“It was not the time we could present such a document. However, we believe that one day, a government will review and adopt it,” he said.
Jonathan emphasized that the conference’s recommendations, crafted by credible Nigerians without political influence, remain relevant to national development.
Tributes to Late Afenifere Leader
During the visit, Jonathan described Adebanjo as a national leader who stood for truth and justice. He praised his wisdom and contributions to Nigeria’s unity.
Atiku also paid tribute, acknowledging Adebanjo’s role in promoting peaceful coexistence. He said the late elder statesman was a guide and adviser to many political figures.
The visits were attended by top dignitaries, including former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma, former PDP Deputy National Chairman Chief Olabode George, and PDP chieftains Dele Momodu and Abdul-Azeez Adediran.
Later in the evening, Jonathan, Atiku, and other notable figures, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, attended a dinner hosted by former President Olusegun Obasanjo at The Delborough Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
