What My Late Wife Did To Secure My Release From Prison – Ex-President, Obasanjo

These reflections were shared during the inauguration of the 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin, the capital of Edo State.

The former president was detained during General Sani Abacha’s regime over allegations of coup involvement.

Obasanjo was eventually freed by the administration of AbdulSalam Abubakar following Abacha’s death, which paved the way for his subsequent presidency.

Stella Obasanjo, originally from Edo State, was instrumental in her husband’s release and later served as Nigeria’s First Lady until her passing during Obasanjo’s second term in office.

Reflecting on her unwavering dedication, the 87-year-old former president said, “My late wife went everywhere to ensure that I came out of prison alive. She traveled to Vatican City, France, and other parts of the world. I owe my freedom to her relentless efforts.” He further remarked, “No amount of honor would be too great for the role she played.”

Obasanjo expressed profound appreciation for the recognition given to Stella through the hospital’s establishment, acknowledging her significant contributions to his public life.

He stated, “I had a woman who made tremendous contributions to my achievements in public service.”
