US to Close Abuja Embassy, Lagos Office Consulate

A notice shared by the mission on its official social media platform confirmed the temporary closure, stating that routine diplomatic and consular services would pause for the federal holiday.

Presidents’ Day is a national holiday in the United States that began as a commemoration of the birth of George Washington and has since evolved into a broader celebration of all American presidents and their contributions to the country.

Providing historical context, the mission explained that the day honours presidential leadership that has shaped the nation’s development and influenced global affairs.

Officials also highlighted Washington’s military legacy, noting that he established the original Badge of Military Merit — a decoration that later became the Purple Heart.

Today, the Purple Heart stands as one of the United States’ most recognised military honours, awarded to service members wounded or killed in action.

The mission added that normal embassy and consular activities are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, February 17, after the holiday observance.
