Following the release of the United Kingdom’s new Immigration White Paper, the British High Commission in Nigeria has issued a statement addressing the potential impact of the reforms and reaffirming its strong relationship with Nigeria.
In the statement released on Monday, a spokesperson for the High Commission stressed that the UK remains a preferred destination for many Nigerians seeking to work, study, visit, or settle, and that the bond between both nations remains solid.
“The UK enjoys strong, long-standing people-to-people links with Nigeria. We are proud that the UK continues to be a top choice for Nigerians, and we value the contributions they make to our society,” the spokesperson said.
The UK government, according to the Commission, is introducing the reforms to restore order and fairness in the legal migration system, reduce net migration, and support sustainable economic growth.
The High Commission further explained that the proposed changes, as outlined in the White Paper, will be implemented gradually, with engagement and consultations expected to take place with relevant partners in Nigeria’s Federal Government once more details emerge.
“We will engage with key stakeholders in the Nigerian government as more information on implementation becomes available,” the statement added.
Reaffirming the UK’s openness, the spokesperson said, “The UK remains an outward-looking nation, open to ideas, diversity, and creativity from across the world. We continue to welcome those who come to contribute positively to our society.”
