Trump’s Immigration Policies: Nigerians shun travel to US

Many prospective students are now reconsidering the US as a destination due to fears surrounding the uncertainty of visa approvals and stricter immigration controls.

Sulaimon Okewole, the Chief Executive Officer of Cardinal E-School and Edu Services, explained that Trump’s executive orders have had a negative impact on travel and educational activities to the US.

He noted that Nigerian students are now exploring alternative study destinations, as political and economic stability have become key considerations in choosing where to study abroad.

“Political stability is now a key consideration, alongside economic stability when choosing a study abroad destination,” Okewole stated. “The US is going to experience a decline in international student enrollment, and addressing these concerns is crucial to regaining its position as a premier destination for international students.”

Choice Ukpe, a representative of Renpha Consulting, echoed similar concerns, stating that securing a US visa was already difficult under normal circumstances, and Trump’s policies would make the process even more challenging.

“It will be very difficult for Nigerians to study in the US now, as visa requirements will be tightened. While US schools offer scholarships, it still doesn’t guarantee a visa,” Ukpe explained. “We are now helping our clients explore alternative options,” he said

Wale Dada, a student who had planned to pursue a Master’s degree in the US, expressed disappointment, noting that the executive orders were affecting his plans.

“With what I have heard about the orders, I do not think I will proceed with the preparations. I cannot afford to leave the country only to be rejected or treated like a criminal. This will severely impact my plans and those of many others like me,” he said.

Another prospective student, Abdulateef Oriyomi, also expressed frustration, saying Trump’s policies had discouraged his plans to study in the US.

“I was already seeking admission to various US institutions, hoping to begin my academic journey. Unfortunately, with the recent policy changes, that aspiration now feels almost unattainable,” Oriyomi lamented.
