Trump Hints On Running For Third Term In 2028 Despite Constitutional Limits

In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Trump suggested there were ways to achieve this, stressing that he was “not joking.”

His comments have drawn comparisons to political maneuvers in some developing countries—something America has often criticized in the past.

“A lot of people want me to do it,” Trump said during a phone interview, referring to his supporters. “But I tell them it’s still early in my administration.”

When pressed on whether he was serious about seeking another term, Trump responded, “I like working. I’m not joking,” but added that it was “far too early to think about it.”

On whether he had been presented with strategies to make a third term possible, Trump said, “There are methods which you could do it.” He, however, declined to elaborate further when asked for details.

One suggestion raised during the interview was a scenario where Vice President JD Vance could contest the presidency and later transfer power to Trump. In response, Trump said, “That’s one,” but hinted at other possible approaches without disclosing them.

Under the U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, a president is limited to two terms. Overturning this rule would require either a two-thirds vote in Congress or the backing of two-thirds of U.S. states to convene a constitutional convention, followed by ratification from three-quarters of the states.

Despite the constitutional hurdle, Trump pointed to his strong poll numbers, insisting that many Americans would support him serving another term.

This is not the first time Trump has made comments about a third term. While some Republican allies have dismissed such remarks as jokes, others appear to take them more seriously.

In a related development, Republican Congressman Andy Ogles recently introduced a resolution advocating for the extension of presidential term limits, which could pave the way for Trump to run again.

Meanwhile, Trump’s close associate, Steve Bannon, has expressed confidence that Trump will contest and win the presidency again in 2028. Speaking in an interview with News Nation, Bannon claimed there were “alternative methods” to allow Trump to serve beyond the two-term limit.

In another move fueling speculation, the White House recently shared an image on social media depicting Trump with a crown, following his administration’s rejection of congestion pricing in New York. The post on X quoted Trump’s previous statement on Truth Social: “Long Live The King!”

Trump’s remarks and the reactions they have sparked continue to generate debate, with political analysts monitoring the situation closely.
