Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has disclosed that her public endorsement of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu during the last general election had a negative impact on her career.
The actress made the remark while giving advice to fellow Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson on how to improve the box office performance of his movies.
Speaking during the conversation, Abraham cautioned actors against openly supporting political figures, stressing that remaining neutral could help protect their professional reputation.
According to her, entertainers should avoid making political declarations publicly and instead focus on their careers and audience.
“The first advice I will give you in my entire life is don’t put your mouth in politics. Don’t tell them you’re supporting anybody. Don’t support anybody, just be on your own. Be neutral,” she said.
When Egbuson reminded her about her previous endorsement of Tinubu, Abraham dismissed it briefly, saying the situation belonged to the past.
However, she admitted that the political stance attracted criticism and had consequences for her work in the movie industry.
The actress explained that the backlash from some members of the public eventually affected her career.
Abraham had earlier faced online criticism following the release of her 2023 film Malaika, with some internet users allegedly circulating pirated copies of the movie on WhatsApp and calling for a boycott because of her political position.
Reacting at the time, the actress expressed frustration over the criticism, questioning why supporting her preferred candidate should be treated as an offence by some members of the public.
