Tinubu Swears In Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance

The inauguration ceremony took place on Monday at the Presidential Villa, where the president expressed confidence in Oyedele’s ability to deliver on the assignment.

Speaking during the event, Tinubu said the decision to appoint Oyedele was straightforward, noting that his competence and dedication made him a suitable choice for the role.

He described the position as demanding, especially at a time when the country is experiencing relative economic stability without corresponding rapid growth.

According to the president, managing fiscal policy under such conditions requires expertise and strong commitment, qualities he said Oyedele possesses.

Tinubu also commended the new minister for his previous contributions to reforming Nigeria’s tax system, which he described as outdated.
He further appreciated Oyedele’s family, particularly his wife, for the support given to him over the years.

The appointment followed Oyedele’s nomination by the president on March 3, 2026, to replace Doris Uzoka-Anite, who was reassigned as Minister of State for Budget and National Planning.

Subsequently, the Senate confirmed his nomination after a screening exercise conducted at the Committee of the Whole.

During the screening, Oyedele stated that his experience in global tax and business reforms across over 180 countries had equipped him for the new responsibility.

He added that his background would help him adapt international best practices to Nigeria’s unique economic environment.

Before his appointment, Oyedele served as chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms.

His leadership of the committee led to the development of key legislative proposals, including the Nigeria Tax Bill and the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill.

Other bills from the committee include the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill, all of which were passed by the National Assembly and assented to by the president in June 2025.

The 50-year-old economist and public policy expert was first appointed to head the tax reform committee in July 2023.

Oyedele previously worked as a fiscal policy partner and Africa tax leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He studied at Yaba College of Technology, where he obtained a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Finance.

He also earned a degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University and has attended executive programmes at several global institutions.

In addition, Oyedele is a professor at Babcock University and a visiting scholar at Lagos Business School.
