President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
The extension, announced on Thursday, means Mr. Adeniyi will now remain in office until August 2026. His tenure was initially scheduled to end on August 31, 2025.
This was contained in a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, the extension is to enable the Customs boss consolidate ongoing reforms and key policies of the present administration. These include the modernisation of the Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.
President Tinubu, the statement noted, is satisfied with Adeniyi’s performance and believes the extension will boost the Customs Service in the areas of revenue generation, trade facilitation, and border security.
Mr. Adeniyi was first appointed in acting capacity in June 2023, following the exit of former CG, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd). He was later confirmed as substantive Comptroller-General in October 2023.
