Suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has returned to the country after spending nearly two weeks on vacation abroad.
Fubara arrived at the international wing of Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, around 7:00 p.m. on Friday. A video circulating online showed the governor being welcomed by some of his aides before he was quickly driven away in a waiting SUV.
His return comes amid heightened political tension in the state.
In March, President Bola Tinubu announced the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly, following the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
The President attributed the drastic decision to rising insecurity in the state, particularly attacks on oil pipelines reportedly carried out by militant groups, as well as the prolonged conflict between the governor and 27 lawmakers.
Also mentioned in the crisis was the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who has remained a key figure in the state’s political dispute.
