Reports suggest that more governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sources attribute the anticipated defections to lingering crises within the PDP, particularly involving the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and unresolved issues at state and zonal levels.
Insiders reveal that some governors have begun courting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by visiting him in Lagos, while others have invited him to commission projects in their states. These engagements reportedly include discussions about political realignments.
Senator Hope Uzodimma, the Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, is alleged to be playing a key role in wooing PDP governors as part of efforts to expand the APC’s influence.
Delta Governor Sparks Rumors
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has drawn attention for publicly supporting President Tinubu’s policies. Speaking through his Commissioner for Information, Ifeanyi Osuoza, at a recent communication workshop in Asaba, Oborevwori praised Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and called on Deltans to back the President’s initiatives.
This has fueled speculations about his possible defection to the APC. A group of concerned PDP leaders in Delta State has urged Oborevwori to clarify his political stance amid these rumors.
In an open letter titled “Open Letter to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to Confirm the Rumours of His Planned Defection to the APC,” signed by Theophilus Ekiyor, Ochuko Oghenekome, and Ezekiel Chukwudi, the group expressed deep concern.
The letter alleged that the governor has been in contact with top presidential aides, including Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to facilitate his entry into the APC.
“We demand prompt clarification from you to put us in the picture. A delayed response could be considered as glaring evidence of your compromised position,” the group stated.
Presidential Praise for Enugu Governor
Meanwhile, President Tinubu recently commended Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah during his visit to the state. Tinubu lauded Mbah’s leadership style and development-focused initiatives, describing him as a “focused and result-oriented leader.”
Plateau Governor Visits Tinubu
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State also made headlines for visiting President Tinubu at his Lagos residence during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, further fueling speculations of potential alignments between PDP governors and the APC.
As the political landscape evolves ahead of the 2027 elections, all eyes remain on the PDP governors and their next moves, which could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political dynamics.
