Mr. Smart Ayodeji Adesipe, a 200 level student of the Department of Criminology and Security Studies has emerged the President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti for the 2022/2023 academic session. In the keenly contested election into the various positions of the Central Executive Council, Adesipe polled 1628 votes to clinch the position of the President after defeating Temidayo Aďebiyi Odefila of the Department of Media and Performing Studies who had 698 votes.
Other elected officials were Folakemi Adedayo (Vice President), Ayokunle Precious Power Ayodele (General Secretary),
Oluwashola Akinrolabu (Assistant General Secretary),
Michael Mayegun Akinola (Treasurer),
Oluwatosin Fadoju (Financial Secretary), Abulsalam Okoro (Director of Sports), Oluwatimilehin Adegbola Fala (Director of Social), Christianah Ayokanmi (Welfare Director),
Taiwo Israel Osolonge (Auditor) and
Heritage Oluwademilade Adejoro (Public Relations Officer).
The Students’ Union election was generally adjudged to be peaceful and transparent while students turned out in large numbers to freely exercise their franchise. According to the Students’ Affairs Officer and Chief Returning Officer for the election, Mr. Toba Sulaiman, about 7000 students took part in the election, an exercise which was conducted by the Directorate of Students’ Affairs headed by the Acting Dean, Mr. Ayodeji Ilugbusi and closely monitored by men of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Department of State Security Service, BOUESTI Security Unit and other Observers. Speaking during the election on the overall conduct of the exercise, the representative of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adekunle Adegun commended the students for comporting themselves in a matured and orderly manner, a development he remarked as a good sign for a better Nigeria devoid of electoral violence and rancour.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Olufemi Adeoluwa has congratulated the newly elected Students’ Union officials on their well deserved victory at the polls.
He charged them to see their election as an opportunity to serve and cooperate with the University Management to ensure peace, development and progress of the institution. He reiterated the determination of the University authorities to make the welfare of the students a top priority. He commended the courage of all the contestants and urged them to see it as a no victor, no vanquished affair. He advised the winners to be magnanimous in victory and enjoined their co-contestants to join go hands with them for the collective development of the Union and the realisation of shared dreams while shunning vices that could truncate their studentship and overall peace of the University.
The elected officials would be sworn-in at a later date and would pilot the affairs of the Union for the 2022/2023 academic session.
