In the lead-up to the next gubernatorial elections in Edo State, a disconcerting scenario has unfolded, demanding attention and reflection. Clem Agba, a former minister for Budget and Planning, has declared his gubernatorial ambitions despite a cloud of controversy surrounding his previous tenure as a junior minister representing Edo State.
The narrative began with Clem Agba seeking the endorsement of the revered Oba of Benin, a request that was not granted based on the Oba’s previous efforts to secure a second ministerial position for Edo State. This act resulted in Edo State having two ministers, with Clem Agba being appointed as the junior minister. However, disappointment followed as it became evident that Clem Agba failed to make a significant positive impact on the lives of Edo citizens during his tenure.
In a surprising turn of events, after his encounter with the Oba of Benin, Clem Agba persisted in his pursuit of the governorship in Edo State. The Oba, during a public event, even challenged the audience to speak out if they had benefited from Clem Agba’s ministerial tenure, further highlighting the lack of tangible achievements.
The call for intervention now turns to Senator Adams Oshiomole, a prominent figure in Edo politics and the current senator representing Edo North. Oshiomole is urged to use his influence and familial ties to advise his fellow Etsako brother, Clem Agba, to step back from the governorship race and save face.
Furthermore, a broader concern is raised about the perceived marginalization of certain communities within Edo State, particularly the Akoko Edos and the Owans, who feel neglected in terms of appointments and developmental projects. The concentration of political power within Etsako, Oshiomole’s region, has created a palpable sense of exclusion for these neighboring communities.
It is paramount that Senator Adams Oshiomole assumes the role of a father to the state, recognizing the necessity for inclusive politics. Edo State is more than just one senatorial district, and as a leader, Oshiomole should advocate for a fair distribution of opportunities and resources.
Presently, the APC caucus in Akoko Edo and Owan West and East has taken a decisive step by aligning with aspirants from Edo South, fostering a workable arrangement to address the longstanding issue of marginalization. This strategic move aims to put an end to the neglect suffered by these communities and promote a more inclusive and equitable political landscape in Edo State.
