Russia says it is paying close attention to unfolding developments in Nigeria following statements by U.S. President Donald Trump indicating possible American military involvement in the West African country.
Speaking during a weekly media briefing in Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, said her country was following the situation with concern and urged Washington to act responsibly and in accordance with international law.
She emphasised that Moscow expected all parties to respect international norms in addressing security-related matters, especially those involving sovereign nations.
Zakharova made the remark while responding to a question from Anadolu News Agency about Trump’s comment that he had asked the Pentagon to prepare “options for possible military measures” against terrorist groups in Nigeria.
Trump had reportedly said the plan was aimed at safeguarding Christian communities allegedly targeted by insurgent attacks in parts of Nigeria.
In reaction to the statement, the Federal Government dismissed the claims, insisting that Nigeria remains committed to religious freedom and the protection of all citizens regardless of faith.
President Bola Tinubu had also reaffirmed that his administration would continue to uphold the country’s long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence among various religious groups.
