RIVERS IN CRISIS, LAGOS ON THE RISE: A Tale Of Leadership Contrasts

 By Joy Mordi

Wike’s eight undisturbed years as Governor garnered widespread support for his administration. However, his current role seems to be marred by controversies and a failure to leverage his newfound position for the benefit of Rivers state. Unlike his predecessor, Amaechi, who maintained a more restrained approach even after parting ways with Wike, the former Governor’s actions are causing increasing irritation among the masses.

The close alliance between Wike and the Chief of Staff to the President has not translated into positive outcomes for Rivers state. Rather, Wike’s influence appears to be contributing to the state’s problems, with his unchecked use of power and divisive rhetoric causing discontent among the populace. Amaechi’s more measured approach in utilizing contacts in Abuja serves as a stark contrast to Wike’s actions.

In the face of these challenges, the people of Rivers state are gearing up for a formidable confrontation with Barrister Wike. President Tinubu’s New Year speech, emphasizing that “tough times don’t last forever,” resonates with the sentiment of the youths and elders who are preparing for an unprecedented showdown. Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, while advocating for peace, is facing the daunting task of mitigating the impact of Wike’s actions on the state.

Simultaneously, in Lagos state, a different narrative unfolds as Ex-Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, supported by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, embarks on a proactive mission to uplift the state. Commissioning several projects in his Surulere constituency and across Lagos, Gbajabiamila’s positive strides stand in stark contrast to the turmoil in Rivers. Strong indications suggest that the FCT Minister played a role in supporting the timely completion and commissioning of these projects.

As Rivers state grapples with crises exacerbated by its former Governor, Lagos state thrives under a leadership that prioritizes development. The contrasting stories of these two states underscore the importance of responsible and effective governance. The people of Rivers state yearn for stability, while the residents of Lagos witness an increase in prosperity under leaders who prioritize the well-being of their constituents. The shame befalling a man who brought calamity upon his people serves as a cautionary tale of the impact of leadership choices on the destiny of a nation.
