Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has refuted reports that he is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Kyari, in a statement on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, described the rumour as false, mischievous, and a deliberate attempt to tarnish his image.
“For the past few days, especially in the last two hours, I have received numerous calls from concerned friends and family members over a report by an online platform claiming I’m with the EFCC,” he said.
“This is pure mischief and a well-planned move by the publishers and their sponsors to achieve their own selfish goal,” he added.
The former NNPCL boss explained that he is currently on a short rest after the recent dissolution of the company’s board and management by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Kyari, who spent 34 years in the NNPCL—17 of them in top management—said he had little or no time off duty during his service.
“I served my country and served God. I have nothing to hide and I’m proud of my record,” he stated.
“As a Muslim, I believe even if I don’t account before men, I will surely account before Allah.”
Kyari warned against the spread of fake news, noting that such actions could discourage foreign investors and damage Nigeria’s image globally.
“False information like this does not help the NNPCL or Nigeria. It sends a wrong message to investors and the international community,” he said.
He urged journalists to verify facts before publishing and avoid being used by people with hidden agendas.
Kyari also appreciated those who reached out to him and assured them that he remains available for any legitimate inquiry.
He served as GCEO of NNPCL under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari and continued in office under President Tinubu until the recent reorganisation.
