Angry youths took to the streets of Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on Tuesday to protest the alleged killing of 23-year-old Emmanuella Ahenjir, a final-year student of the Federal University, Wukari.
Emmanuella was reportedly shot dead by unidentified police officers last Friday morning at the Wurukum roundabout while she was in a vehicle coming from the Gyado Villa area of the city.
The incident has sparked public outrage, drawing scores of protesters—mostly youths—who are demanding justice. The demonstration, led by well-known gender rights activist Ukan Kurugh, saw the protesters converging at the Wurukum roundabout.
Carrying placards with bold messages such as “End Police Brutality” and “Justice for Emmanuella,” the demonstrators called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the killing.
They also urged relevant authorities to bring the culprits to justice and take urgent steps to end what they described as the rising cases of police abuse and extrajudicial killings.
As of the time of this report, police authorities in Benue State were yet to release an official statement on the incident.
