The Kano State Police Command has banned Durbar processions and other public festivities traditionally held during Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, citing security concerns arising from the ongoing Emirship tussle between Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and Emir Muhammad Sanusi II.
Announcing the ban after a high-level security meeting at Bompai Police Headquarters, Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, said the move was necessary to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
“As part of our collective commitment to sustaining peace and security, a ban has been placed on all Durbar activities throughout the state during the 2025 Eid-El-Fitr Sallah celebrations,” Bakori stated.
He explained that credible intelligence reports indicated a plot by miscreants to use the Durbar as a pretext for violence, which could plunge the state into anarchy.
Rising Tensions Over Emirship Dispute
Kano has been on edge following the rival claims to the throne by the two cousins—Bayero and Sanusi II—both asserting their legitimacy as the Emir of Kano. Given the significance of the Durbar, which is traditionally led by the Emir, authorities fear that parallel celebrations by the two factions could escalate into violent confrontations.
“In pursuit of a safe and secure celebration, the Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, has assessed the security situation and, after necessary consultations with the Kano State Government and key stakeholders, decided to prohibit all Durbar activities,” the Commissioner added.
Security Measures for Eid Prayers
The police have assured the public that adequate security deployments will be in place at designated Eid prayer grounds. However, the Commissioner outlined strict guidelines for worshippers:
No horse riding (Kilisa) or car racing
No carrying of suspicious objects
No reckless or dangerous driving
Parents must caution their children against being manipulated by troublemakers
The Commissioner urged Kano residents to prioritize peace:
“As we celebrate this joyous occasion, let us put aside our differences and come together as law-abiding citizens for the progress of the state and the nation.”
Call for Public Cooperation
The Police Command also encouraged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
“We appreciate the cooperation of all stakeholders and urge residents to contribute to a safer and more secure Kano State,” the statement concluded.
