Police arrest man for staging own kidnap to collect ransom

The state police command confirmed the incident on Tuesday, describing it as another attempt by criminals to exploit the rising concerns over insecurity for personal gain.

According to police spokesperson Olayinka Ayanlade, officers from the Ogbese Division, working alongside members of OPC, local hunters and vigilantes, first intercepted two suspects during a routine patrol around Kashimola/Agunla Forest.

Items recovered from the suspects — including N800,000 cash, Benson cigarettes and a bottle of Aromatic Schnapps — immediately raised questions about their mission.

Ayanlade said the pair claimed the money was intended as ransom for their younger brother, Mathew Ekele, who they alleged was in captivity.

Following the claim, the police reportedly launched a sting operation aimed at arresting whoever turned up to pick the supposed ransom.

During the operation, operatives stopped a motorcycle transporting two men — John Peter, 30, and James Peter — who were believed to be connected to the reported incident.

The police spokesman noted that one individual later appeared at the agreed collection point and was arrested while attempting to take possession of the cash.

Investigators subsequently uncovered that the alleged victim, Mathew Ekele, had masterminded the entire plot and had been hiding in a nearby bush along Ogbese Road waiting to receive the ransom.

His motorcycle was recovered at the scene, confirming his involvement in the scheme.

Commending the success of the operation, Ayanlade attributed the breakthrough to intelligence-driven policing encouraged by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

The command advised residents to stay alert and report suspicious behaviour promptly, stressing that staged kidnappings remain a growing concern in some communities.

Police authorities assured that they remain committed to tackling all forms of crime and protecting residents across the state.
