Organisers of Ibadan Children’s Funfair Arrested Following Stampede

The incident reportedly claimed several lives and left many injured.

Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed the arrests via a statement on his official X account, stating that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.

He expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, describing the day as a tragic one for the state. He also outlined measures taken to restore order and prevent further casualties.

“Earlier today, an incident occurred at Islamic High School Basorun, the venue of an event organised for families. Sadly, a stampede at the venue has led to multiple deaths and injuries. This is a very sad day for us here in Oyo State,” Makinde wrote.

The governor assured the public that immediate steps had been taken, including deploying security personnel and medical teams to the scene. The event was halted, and attendees were evacuated to ensure safety.

Makinde also pledged accountability, stating: “Anyone directly or indirectly responsible for this disaster will be held accountable. I urge everyone to remain calm as investigations continue.”

While the state government has not disclosed the names of the organisers, investigations revealed that the funfair was coordinated by Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, in collaboration with Agidigbo 88.7 FM, a radio station owned by Oriyomi Hamzat.

On Tuesday, Agidigbo FM had promoted the event on its Facebook page, announcing it as part of Queen Naomi’s initiative under her foundation, Women In Need of Guidance and Support (WINGS). The event aimed to host 5,000 children between the ages of 0-13, offering scholarships and other prizes.

The post assured parents of adequate security at the venue. However, Wednesday’s tragic turn of events has raised concerns over crowd control and event management.

Governor Makinde reiterated the state’s commitment to ensuring justice and urged the public to remain patient as investigations progress. He also extended prayers for the repose of the departed and strength for their grieving families.
