In the heart of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State is the Olives Specialist Clinics and Fertility Centre. Located along Tinuola school in the Housing area of the state capital.
The iconic and well-placed facility has in the last few years changed the story of couples and individuals who had long been expecting babies.
From its multi-million-naira technological equipment, trained workforce and the expertise of the Medical Director, the hospital has proven to be one of the few centres in Nigeria where couples and individuals visit for their IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) treatment with impressive success rates.
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) that helps individuals or couples get pregnant by fertilizing eggs with sperms outside the body. The process involves stimulating the ovaries to produce eggs, retrieving them, fertilizing them with sperms in a laboratory, and then transferring the resulting embryo(s) into the uterus for potential implantation.
The Medical Director of Olives Specialist Clinics and Fertility Centre, Professor Adebayo Augustine Adeniyi, said the facility in the last few years has delivered no fewer than 123 babies through the IVF treatment.
He added that a recent case was the one delivered by a 60-year-old woman who conceived through IVF at the centre and delivered the baby at ABUAD multi system Hospital, Ado Ekiti after decades of waiting for the fruit of the womb.
The Obstetrician & Gynaecologist noted that the cost of the treatment is affordable compared to other centres in the country, calling on couples and individuals still hoping to have their babies to visit the centre for IVF treatment.
” As of now we have 123 babies born through IVF in this centre. Last month (August, 2025) alone, we had Ten (10) babies. Although, some of the babies were not delivered here, at Olives clinics. I delivered three of the babies myself, while the remaining 7 babies were at other centres.
” So far, we have 81 single babies, 20 twins and eight sets of triplets,” he said.
Professor Adeniyi further said,” We have been recording successes since inception from 2019, but our name actually came into limelight in January 2022 when one of the oldest patients to conceive through IVF was delivered here. “Mrs Tope Ogundipe, was in the news. She was 63-year-old at the time; this feat led to referral from many places across the world.
” We have also received invitations from friends to come to big cities like Port Harcourt, Abuja and Lagos, where we can probably make more money but I said,“somebody must also be in Ekiti State rendering IVF services and procedures’’ Our patients base extends beyond Nigeria as we have clients coming from abroad such as Canada, United Kingdom and United States, this is because IVF treatment is quite expensive over there, compared with what obtained here at home, and with comparable outcomes, so a lot of clients come from abroad for IVF in our facility here.
“So, like I said we have been referring some of our successful cases to various places for delivery. I am sure you heard recently that a 60-year-old woman delivered twins at ABUAD, in fact I didn’t remember that she was actually sixty – year old “Fortunately she conceived through IVF here at Olives Clinics, but since she lives along Polytechnic Road, Ado Ekiti near ABUAD, I decided that the stress of coming for antenatal far away from her abode would be too much for her, first she is old and second, she is carrying twin pregnancy. So, I encouraged her register near her place. In fact we have had two triplets delivered at ABUAD before now.”
On the issue of causes of delay in getting pregnant for some women and how it can be prevented, the medical expert said,” the commonest cause is the blockage of the tubes, which is usually due to previous infections and poorly treated infections in a woman. Those infections commonly referred to as toilet disease are actually pelvic infections usually contacted from unprotected sexual intercourse. ” Such infections may affect and blocks the tubes which are very tiny in calibres. When a woman has such infection, which is really common, the first symptom may be abnormal vaginal discharge.
” The prevention we usually talk about for those who can do it before getting married, is sexual abstinence. But here we are not preaching abstinence too much because we know that may be rather hypocritical as some people may not be able practice abstinence,” So, we preach the use of condom. Condom is highly protective, it is indeed a two-edged sword, as it protects against infections and also protects against unwanted pregnancies but unfortunately, close to 80% of unmarried young people do not use condom during sexual intercourse in our society today.
