Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has condemned the brutal assault on a female corps member in Anambra State, describing the incident as “inhumane, barbaric and primitive.”
Obi, in a statement via his official X handle, said he was “ashamed and heartbroken” that such an attack could take place in Nigeria in 2025.
The incident, captured in a viral video, showed operatives of Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, storming a corps members’ lodge in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, where they assaulted Jennifer Edema Elohor and some of her colleagues. The video revealed the corps member being beaten and stripped naked by armed men.
Reacting, the former Anambra governor said no society should condone the humiliation and dehumanisation of its citizens, especially women and the vulnerable.
“That young girl could have been anyone’s daughter, sister, or even mine. What happened is not only a violation of law and morality, but also a direct assault on our collective humanity,” Obi said.
He urged the authorities to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted without delay, stressing that the case should serve as a deterrent against future abuses.
Obi also called for stronger safeguards, policies and communal values to protect corps members and ordinary citizens.
“Our humanity must always come first. Without it, we are nothing but a people adrift in cruelty,” he added.
