Oba Abimbola Owoade has officially ascended the throne as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, succeeding the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State had earlier presented the staff of office to the new monarch in January, ahead of the traditional rites.
Oba Owoade completed the customary 21-day Oro Ipebi rites on Saturday, March 29, paving the way for today’s coronation ceremony held at Oliveth Baptist High School, Oyo.
The historic event was attended by prominent traditional rulers and dignitaries, including the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi; and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, among others.
The coronation marks a new chapter in the history of the ancient Oyo Kingdom.
