The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has advised Nigerians, especially those travelling to the United States, to be responsible and law-abiding in the use of their visas.
Director-General of the agency, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, gave the advice in a statement signed by the NOA’s Director of Communications and Media, Mr. Bala Musa, on Thursday in Abuja.
Issa-Onilu cautioned against the misuse of U.S. visas, stressing that Nigerians should not engage in activities that go beyond the scope or category of their travel documents.
“Visa screening does not stop at the point of entry,” he said. “U.S. authorities monitor visa holders even after arrival. Any breach of immigration rules or laws could lead to visa revocation, deportation, or a permanent entry ban.”
He urged Nigerians travelling to the U.S. to always declare cash exceeding approved limits and avoid carrying prohibited items in their luggage.
The NOA boss further warned that overstaying a visa or violating its terms could have serious consequences, not only for the individual but also for other Nigerians seeking to travel legally.
He also encouraged Nigerian students in the U.S. to ensure they regularise their visa status before expiry to avoid penalties.
On the issue of birth tourism, Issa-Onilu noted that applying for tourist visas with the intent to give birth in the U.S. may lead to automatic denial, as American authorities now enforce strict screening measures to prevent misuse of their visa system.
He said the United States remains open to genuine visitors but maintains a fair and transparent visa process aimed at protecting its national interest.
The NOA urged Nigerians to be good ambassadors of the country by respecting the laws of their host nations and conducting themselves responsibly while abroad.
