The Minister of State for Defense, Hon. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has dismissed claims about the presence of Lakurawa militants in Nigeria’s Northwest region, describing such assertions as baseless and aimed at discrediting the Federal Government and security agencies.
Speaking to journalists at his Gusau residence on Sunday, Matawalle, a former Governor of Zamfara State, stated that military operations in the region have successfully neutralized terrorist gangs, dismantled their camps, and recovered weapons.
“These criminals are not Nigerians but disgruntled elements from Burkina Faso and Mali who infiltrated Nigeria to wreak havoc. We have finished with them in the Northwest zone,” he declared.
Criticism of Rumors and Media
The minister criticized those spreading what he termed unfounded rumors about Lakurawa militants, accusing them of attempting to tarnish the Federal Government’s image. He also condemned journalists, particularly on social media, for propagating unverified reports.
“Military troops are eliminating bandits and their leaders daily, but social media operators fail to report these successes. Instead, they rely on misinformation from locals intending to discredit the current administration,” Matawalle said.
He urged Nigerians to disregard false narratives and assured them of the government’s commitment to eradicating banditry.
Government’s Commitment
Matawalle emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration prioritizes the safety and security of all citizens. He reiterated the government’s determination to end banditry in the Northwest by 2025, adding, “The battle against banditry is ongoing, and we are seeing progress. There is no going back on our plans to neutralize all bandits.”
The minister called on citizens to support the government’s efforts and avoid spreading misinformation, stressing that security agencies remain steadfast in ensuring peace and stability across the region.
