Nigerians and other immigrants in the United Kingdom say they are increasingly living in fear following revelations of racism and misogyny within the London Metropolitan Police.
A BBC Panorama investigation secretly filmed officers at Charing Cross Police Station making racist comments about immigrants, mocking rape, and even suggesting shooting migrants.
The exposé sparked outrage, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer demanding a “robust response” and London Mayor Sadiq Khan describing the footage as “sickening.” He pledged zero tolerance for officers who abuse their positions.
For Nigerian immigrants, the revelations confirm what they experience daily. “The streets are now dangerous. We are afraid to go out at night,” said UK-based lawyer Dele Olawanle, warning that racism is also creeping into British courts.
Another Nigerian, Victor Emmanuel, said the findings were “no surprise” as black and ethnic minorities encounter similar behaviour across the country.
