My account of Mohbad’s story, Naira Marley speaks out

Popular musician, Azeez Fashola, also known as Naira Marley, has narrated his side of the story over the death of his former signee, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly called Mohbad.

Naira Marley, in a two-hour documentary released, said he neither bullied nor killed the late artiste, who died on Sept. 12, 2023, at the age of 27.

In February, a Magistrate’s Court in Yaba, Lagos, discharged Naira Marley, music promoter Samson Balogun (Sam Larry), Ibrahim Owodunni (Primeboy) and Mohbad’s former manager, Babatunde Opere, of any complicity in the death.

In July, however, a Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu recommended the prosecution of auxiliary nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, who treated Mohbad before he died. Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi said the nurse acted with gross negligence by giving the singer an injection without medical prescription.

Speaking in the new video, Naira Marley alleged that Mohbad battled with substance use as far back as 2020.

“He told me he was taking Ice (crack). I wasn’t angry, I called him, advised him and told him the danger,” he said.

The “Soapy” crooner also dismissed reports that Mohbad was cheated in their contract, insisting that financial dealings were transparent and based on a 50-50 sharing formula.

On claims that Mohbad was afraid of going to the hospital, Marley displayed a WhatsApp conversation from 2020 showing that the singer had received medical care.

He also recalled the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) raid on the Marlian house in February 2022, where Mohbad had a panic attack and accused him and others during a live Instagram session.

“During that live video, Mohbad accused me, Zino and even our wives. He was in a vulnerable state of psychosis,” he said.

Naira Marley further revealed that Mohbad attempted suicide in March 2022, and he personally reached out to the late singer’s parents to seek help.

He claimed that Mohbad later withdrew 72,000 dollars from a digital streaming partner without proper clearance, leading to disputes with the label.

According to him, the last time he saw Mohbad was in October 2022, during a disagreement between the late artiste and his manager.

Naira Marley, who said he was in Amsterdam on the day of Mohbad’s death, stressed that he expected investigators to focus on those who were with the deceased shortly before his passing.

“I’ve never sent anybody to bully him,” Marley said, while also criticising the police for detaining him for two months at Panti, Lagos.

He added that all royalties from Mohbad’s works under Marlian Music remain intact, and his family can access them through their appointed representatives.
