Multiple Explosions Rock Maiduguri Hours After Boko Haram Attack

The blasts were reported on Monday evening around key locations in the city, including the Post Office area and the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the explosions occurred at about 7:15 p.m., causing panic and confusion among residents and traders in the affected areas.

Unverified reports also suggested that another explosion may have occurred within the busy Monday Market, though authorities had yet to confirm the incident at the time of filing this report.

Video clips circulating online showed injured victims being evacuated to hospitals for urgent medical attention following the blasts.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Nahum Daso, said security agencies had received reports of explosions at the hospital gate and the Post Office area.

He, however, noted that information regarding a possible blast at the Monday Market was still being verified.

According to the police spokesman, details about casualties remain unclear as victims were taken to different medical facilities across the city.

Residents in the area expressed fears that the explosions might have resulted in several deaths and injuries.

A media aide to the Borno State Governor, Dauda Iliya, said authorities were working to determine the extent of damage and possible casualties from the incidents.

An AFP correspondent at the hospital reportedly observed many injured persons receiving treatment.

Another eyewitness, Idris Suleiman Gimba of the National Blood Service Commission, also confirmed that one of the blasts occurred near the Post Office.

Earlier, suspected insurgents had launched an overnight assault on a military position on the outskirts of Maiduguri.

Security reports also indicated a separate attack in Damboa Local Government Area, located south of Maiduguri.

Insurgent groups, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province, have in recent times intensified attacks across the North-East region.

The prolonged insurgency in the region has claimed over 40,000 lives and displaced millions of residents over the past 16 years.
Recent data show that several explosion incidents have been recorded in Borno State within the last six months.

These include a December 2025 blast at Gamboru Market in Maiduguri that claimed multiple lives during evening prayers.

Another incident occurred in June 2025 at a fish market entrance in Konduga, where a female suicide bomber detonated explosives.

In April 2025, an improvised explosive device struck a military-escorted convoy along the Maiduguri–Damboa Road, killing several commuters.

Governor Babagana Zulum had earlier raised concerns over emerging security threats, including the use of drones by insurgents in parts of the state.

He warned that the growing use of such technology by non-state actors poses a serious danger and called for urgent measures to address the threat.

Security agencies say efforts are ongoing to contain the situation and restore calm in the affected areas.
