Telecom operators in Nigeria have implemented revised data tariffs following the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) approval of a 50% increase in data prices. The tariff adjustment, announced by the NCC on Monday, has prompted leading providers such as MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile to revise their pricing structures to reflect the hike.
MTN’s new rates show significant changes, with the price of 25GB now at ₦9,750, up from ₦6,500. Similarly, 10GB, 5GB, and 1GB now cost ₦5,250, ₦2,250, and ₦525, respectively. Airtel has increased its 23GB data plan to ₦9,000, up from ₦6,000, and 10GB is now ₦4,500, a rise from ₦3,000. For Glo subscribers, the cost of 24GB has risen to ₦7,500 from ₦5,000, while 10.8GB now costs ₦3,000, up from ₦2,500. Meanwhile, 9mobile adjusted its 22GB plan to ₦7,500 from ₦5,000, and 9.5GB is now priced at ₦3,750, compared to its earlier ₦1,500 rate.
Public Outcry Amid Rising Costs
The new tariffs have sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, many of whom are already struggling with high living costs. Telecom operators have attributed the price hike to inflation, increased fuel costs, foreign exchange challenges, and the growing expense of maintaining infrastructure.
The NCC defended the increase, stating it was essential to sustain the sector amid economic pressures. However, the decision has drawn criticism, with consumers expressing concerns about its impact on affordability and access to digital services in a country heavily reliant on mobile internet connectivity.
