Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Iyabo Ojo, has raised alarm over alleged threats to her life and that of her family following her public advocacy for justice in the controversial death of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
In a statement posted on her verified Instagram page, Ojo said she has been facing constant intimidation, cyberbullying, and threats since she joined calls demanding accountability over Mohbad’s death.
“It is, therefore, not surprising to now see coffins inscribed with my name, barefaced videos threatening my life and properties, and further confirmation that my family and business enterprise remain endangered,” the actress stated.
Her outcry followed an invitation by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre, over petitions linked to an old live video where she reportedly urged some individuals to come forward regarding the singer’s demise.
Ojo clarified that she never directly accused anyone of being responsible for Mohbad’s death. According to her, her only interest has been to support a transparent investigation through legal means.
“I never affirmed that Mohbad’s death was caused by any specific individual. Otherwise, I would not have taken the legal and investigative actions I did,” she explained.
The actress further disclosed that her non-governmental organisation, Pinkies Foundation, had written petitions to various government officials, including the Lagos State Governor, the Attorney General, and the Inspector General of Police, requesting an independent investigation and a coroner’s inquest.
As part of her efforts, Ojo said she also met with senior security officers and lawmakers in Lagos, including the late DCP Ayilara and members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, to press for a thorough probe.
However, she said her involvement has come at a high personal cost. Ojo alleged that she and her children have become victims of coordinated attacks, both online and offline.
“Certain individuals have, over the years, consistently called for my downfall, the destruction of my source of livelihood, and have incited public violence against me and my children, all without any intervention from the authorities,” she lamented.
One of the most disturbing moments, according to her, was receiving a threatening letter days before her daughter’s wedding in Tanzania.
“The letter explicitly stated that I would go through hell in the next three months,” she disclosed.
She also confirmed that her office was recently gutted by fire, further increasing her distress, although she stopped short of linking the incident to the threats she had received.
Ojo said the experiences have taken a toll on her and her family, and she now needs time to recover emotionally.
Defending her actions, the actress insisted that her advocacy was purely driven by her passion for justice. “I wish to clarify that I never accused anyone of being responsible for Mohbad’s death. I was simply reacting emotionally to disturbing videos and using my platform to call for justice,” she stated.
Despite the threats, Ojo maintained her readiness to cooperate with the police. “I am fully ready to continue to honour further police invitation or arraignment, as I have done in the past, without fear,” she declared.
She also thanked her fans, family, and supporters for standing by her through these challenging times.
Mohbad, aged 27, died in September 2023 under controversial circumstances. His death sparked nationwide protests and demands for a thorough investigation.
