Popular Nollywood filmmaker, Funke Akindele, has revealed how public mockery over her failed marriages toughened her and propelled her to greater success in the film industry.
Akindele shared her emotional journey during the Chude Live Conversation Show held on Sunday, alongside other creatives such as Falz, Kiekie, Veekee James, Moses Bliss, Taaooma, and Hauwa Lawal.
Speaking about her personal experiences, Akindele said the aim of the event was to allow celebrities to open up about their struggles, pains, and triumphs.
“There was a video on social media where some women mocked me for not having a husband,” she said. “I cried and cried. I saw all the insults online — how I left one husband for another. It was tough.”
Akindele disclosed that she later sought therapy, a move that helped her heal and find the strength to keep moving forward.
“I told myself I couldn’t continue like this. I reached out and started speaking to a therapist. After then, I felt better,” she said. “I am stronger now. I have the strength to face any challenge life throws at me.”
She added that the mockery she faced inspired her to put her pain into her work, leading to the production of a film that crossed the N1 billion mark at the Nigerian box office, a feat some had told her was impossible.
According to her, one of her goals is to empower upcoming filmmakers and create new movie stars in Nollywood.
Also speaking at the event, media personality and fashion influencer, Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, popularly known as Kiekie, said she felt honoured to be part of the live show.
“I feel delighted whenever I have the chance to express myself before a live audience. It’s a great opportunity to have conversations around career, work, and the industry,” she said.
Rapper and actor, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, reflected on his experience during the EndSARS protests, describing it as one of the toughest periods of his life but affirming he had no regrets.
“In my life, I was taught never to regret my actions. The EndSARS protest was monumental, and I appreciate being part of the struggle,” Falz stated.
Other notable personalities like comedian Bovi Ugboma, rapper and faith leader Pastor Jerry Eze, also shared how they manage their mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being amid fame and online scrutiny.
Speaking during the show, entrepreneur and storyteller, Chude Jideonwo, said the event marked the debut of #WithChude Live.
According to him, the show is not just about conversations but creating a space where laughter, vulnerability, wisdom, and healing come together, offering young Nigerians an environment where they feel seen, heard, and inspired.
