Economic hardship has once again claimed a life in Imo State as a middle-aged water vendor, identified as Odomma, was reportedly found dead in Amakpu Okuku community, Owerri West Local Government Area.
The father of four, said to be in his 50s, was discovered on Friday morning in an uncompleted building near his residence. Community sources alleged that he took his own life after battling prolonged financial difficulties.
Residents stated that the deceased, who sold water in jerry cans and buckets for as low as ₦100, had been visibly distressed in recent months as he struggled to meet his family’s needs.
They added that he had previously threatened to end his life, claiming his wife and children had denied him food because he could no longer provide for them.
A community member, who identified himself as Ikenna, recalled that the deceased had often complained to his friends.
“He said the suffering was too much and that if things didn’t change, he would end it all. We advised him to take the matter to the village head, but he refused. Unfortunately, he went ahead with the act,” Ikenna said.
The incident drew a large crowd as residents rushed to the scene to confirm the report and some filmed the lifeless body with their mobile phones.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Imo, Mr Henry Okoye, said he would confirm the matter with the Divisional Police Officer of Owerri West.
“Please give me a few minutes to call and confirm from the DPO. I will get back to you,” he said. Subsequent efforts to reach him were unsuccessful as his phone was later unreachable.
