The Police Service Commission has appointed Olohundare Moshood Jimoh as the new Commissioner of Police for Lagos State amid the ongoing leadership crisis in the State House of Assembly.
A statement by the Commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, confirmed Jimoh’s appointment. Until his deployment, Jimoh was the Commissioner of Police in charge of Ports Authority, Eastern Ports.
Jimoh, an indigene of Kwara State, previously served as the Force Public Relations Officer and held several key positions, including Deputy Commissioner at the Airport Police, Deputy Commissioner for Finance and Administration, and Deputy Commissioner for General Investigation.
While the commission did not disclose the reason for Jimoh’s appointment, political analysts believe it is linked to the leadership tussle in the Lagos Assembly.
Security Tightened at Lagos Assembly Complex
On Monday, heightened security was observed at the Lagos State House of Assembly as lawmakers resumed plenary. Security operatives and patrol vans were stationed within and around the premises, leading to a brief delay in the session.
Reports indicate that some security personnel attempted to access the chambers, sparking mild tension. However, an Assembly official confirmed that Speaker Mojisola Meranda and 32 lawmakers were present for the day’s proceedings.
Some Assembly staff and lawmakers were seen in small groups, discussing the unfolding situation. While sources insist the House leadership remains intact, speculations persist that Meranda faces pressure to resign or risk impeachment.
Workers Rally Behind Speaker Meranda
A group of Assembly workers publicly declared their support for Speaker Meranda, insisting she must remain in office.
Meranda emerged as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly last month after lawmakers removed former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over alleged financial misconduct.
Obasa Challenges Removal in Court
Meanwhile, Obasa has rejected his removal, insisting he remains the legitimate Speaker.
Addressing journalists at his Ikeja residence, the Agege lawmaker dismissed the corruption allegations against him as “baseless and politically motivated.”
“My status in the House? I still believe I am the Speaker until due process is followed,” Obasa stated.
He has since filed a lawsuit against the Lagos Assembly and Meranda, seeking a court declaration that his removal was illegal, as it occurred while the Assembly was on recess.
