The Kano State Government has solicited support for the ongoing projects at Northwest University, Kano, to boost educational development in the state and the northern region.
This includes calls for both moral and financial support to help the institution fulfill its obligations and improve infrastructure and services.
The State Governor, Abba Yusuf, stated this on Saturday in Kano, during the combined convocation ceremony held at the university campus.
He said the university, which was established in 2012 by former Governor of Kano State, Rabi’u Kwankwaso was a blessing to the state and the entire North.
He decried neglect of the institution by immediate past administration, saying his government inherited a university with decaying infrastructure and severe financial constraints in 2023.
According to him, this current administration will continue to prioritise investment in tertiary education across the state.
“This convocation is unique and marks the graduation of students, but also the recognition of eminent Nigerians and the formal investiture of the new Chancellor,”he said.
The event witnessed the official investiture of the Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Muhammad I (rtd), as the University Chancellor.
“I do hereby, with utmost delight, formally install you as Chancellor of Northwest University, Kano, and confer upon you all the powers and privileges of the office,”he declared.
He urged the new Chancellor to discharge his duties with fairness and integrity, in line with the laws and values of the institution.
Five other distinguished Nigerians were honoured with honorary doctorate degrees at the event, including Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso, who received an Honorary Doctorate in Education.
Others are: late Alhaji Aminu Dantata, who was awarded posthumously with a Doctor in Humanities; and Hajiya Mariya Dantata, who also received a Doctorate in Humanities.
Also, Alhaji Aliyu Bebeji and Alhaji Adamu Maikifi, who were honoured for their contributions to entrepreneurship.
The governor commended the awardees for pledging to undertake new developmental projects at the university, expressing optimism that their support would enhance the institution’s growth.
In his remarks on behalf of the honourees, Kwankwaso, a former governor and 2023 NNPP presidential candidate, expressed gratitude for the recognition and pledged continued support to the university.
Earlier, the Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Kurawa, appealed for increased investment in infrastructure and learning facilities across the university campuses to ensure a more conducive learning environment.
