The Rivers State Government has expressed shock over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara while leaving Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, whom it accused of fueling the state’s political crisis.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the government described the move as unjust, insisting that Fubara remained committed to constitutional order, peace, and good governance despite the turbulence in the state.
Johnson noted that since assuming office, the governor has prioritized the protection of lives and property while driving the development of Rivers State. Even amid political challenges, Fubara upheld his constitutional responsibilities and placed the people’s interests above political considerations.
He recalled that after President Tinubu intervened to mediate the crisis, the state government complied with the peace terms, including reinstating resigned commissioners. Additionally, the administration promptly implemented the Supreme Court’s ruling upon receiving the certified judgment, further demonstrating its commitment to due process.
However, Johnson lamented that lawmakers loyal to Wike, who previously governed the state, have continued to obstruct peace and stability. He questioned why, despite these efforts, Fubara was removed while Wike remained in office.
“It is shocking that Mr. President sacked the governor and left his minister, who is the principal actor,” he stated.
Reassuring Rivers residents, the commissioner emphasized that governance remains uninterrupted. Salaries are being paid, developmental projects continue, and security is intact.
At this critical time, the government urged citizens to remain peaceful and law-abiding, affirming its commitment to engaging with relevant institutions to uphold democracy and ensure the state’s continued progress.
“We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” Johnson added.
The Rivers State Government reaffirmed its commitment to the well-being of its people as it navigates the unfolding political situation.
