Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that a single phone call from U.S. President Donald Trump could be enough to open the door to renewed diplomacy and de-escalation in the Middle East, amid ongoing hostilities with Israel.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Araghchi stated, “It takes one phone call from Washington to muzzle someone like Netanyahu. That may pave the way for a return to diplomacy.”
The remark comes in response to President Trump’s recent call for talks between Iran and Israel, warning that the ongoing conflict could spiral into broader regional devastation.
Araghchi added that Iran has no interest in prolonging the war, but stressed that unless Israel halts its aggression, Iran’s military responses will continue. “If President Trump is genuine about diplomacy and interested in stopping this war, next steps are consequential,” he said.
In contrast, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue military operations until Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs are fully neutralized. Netanyahu has repeatedly framed the conflict as a matter of national survival.
The exchange comes at a time of high alert across the region, with fears of escalation involving multiple actors, including U.S. forces, Iranian proxies, and Israeli allies. Diplomats and international observers are closely watching Washington for signs of any backchannel outreach.
Araghchi’s comments suggest Tehran may be open to diplomatic engagement, but only if the U.S. uses its leverage to rein in Israel’s military campaign.
