The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed a full investigation into the killing of a 14-year-old student, Kehinde Alade, who was reportedly hit by a stray bullet in Ibadan, Oyo State, on his way to sit for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The tragic incident occurred as the boy was being driven to the exam venue by his father, who, according to the Oyo State Government, was allegedly driving against traffic at the time.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement issued on Wednesday, confirmed that the officer involved in the shooting has been taken into custody. He added that the Inspector-General has condemned the incident and assured the public that justice will be served.
“The IGP has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation into the unfortunate killing involving officers of the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority,” Adejobi said.
He further conveyed the IGP’s condolences to the bereaved family, assuring that the findings of the investigation will be made public and that all those responsible will be held accountable.
Meanwhile, the IGP also strongly condemned an attack on police operatives in Edo State by a mob.
According to the statement, the attack occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 20, 2025, near the University of Benin axis in Okhuimwun Community, Ovia North-East Local Government Area, while operatives from the Force Intelligence Department – Intelligence Response Team were transiting through the area from Lagos.
The mob reportedly blocked the road and launched an unprovoked attack on the officers, using stones, sticks, and other harmful objects, leaving two officers seriously injured.
Adejobi noted that despite the life-threatening situation, the officers exercised maximum restraint and did not return fire. The injured officers are currently receiving treatment and are in stable condition.
The police spokesman warned against unprovoked attacks on security personnel and assured that an investigation is ongoing to identify and prosecute those behind the Edo incident.
