IBB: How Maryam Captured My Heart, Changed My Life

In his newly released memoir, A Journey in Service, launched in Abuja, IBB reflected on their love story, which began before the Nigerian Civil War, and how Maryam played a vital role in his leadership and governance.

A Love Story Forged in War

IBB recounted how he met Maryam in Bida, with their bond growing stronger over time. Following a near-death experience in the Civil War, he realized the importance of family stability and decided to settle down with Maryam.

“In April 1969, I was shot near Umuahia and evacuated to Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Lying in a hospital bed, I reflected on my future. As the only male child, I worried about my family name ending. That was when I decided to marry,” he wrote.

Winning Maryam’s Heart

Maryam was initially skeptical of IBB’s sincerity due to his reputation. However, with the support of her family, he convinced her. He also assured her of a monogamous marriage, a promise he kept.

“I admired her reserved nature and upbringing. I was determined not to accept ‘No’ as an answer. Fortunately, she agreed,” he revealed.

A Power Couple in Leadership

As First Lady, Maryam Babangida redefined the role by championing initiatives for women’s empowerment. Through the Better Life for Rural Women Programme, she promoted education, healthcare, and economic development, inspiring other African First Ladies.

IBB praised her leadership, stating, “She reshaped the position of First Lady, aligning her work with national development goals. She mobilized rural women for self-reliance and political participation.”

Maryam’s Lasting Legacy

Despite her passing in 2009, IBB admitted that his life remains divided into two—before and after Maryam.

“I never imagined she would go before me, but life is in Allah’s hands. Coping without her is difficult, but her lasting impact gives me strength,” he concluded.
