
The 44th Coronation Committee of the Olubadan of Ibadanland has unveiled a week-long programme of activities to celebrate the historic coronation of the city’s new monarch.
The schedule was announced after the inaugural meeting of the committee on Monday in Ibadan, presided over by its chairman and former President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Bayo Oyero.
According to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the coronation festivities will officially begin on Monday, September 22, 2025, and climax with the grand ceremony on Friday, September 26, 2025, at Mapo Hall.
The statement detailed a rich line-up of cultural, spiritual, and academic events:
• Monday, September 22 – Interdenominational service at the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, organised by the CCII.
• Tuesday, September 23 – Cultural Day, organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, followed by a Coronation Lecture to be delivered by renowned historian Prof. Toyin Falola.
• Thursday, September 25 – Mega Praise Worship at the Civic Centre, Idi Ape.
• Friday, September 26 – Grand Coronation of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland at Mapo Hall.
Stakeholders in Attendance; The inaugural meeting attracted wide representation from traditional, political, and community leaders.
Present were representatives of the Olubadan, including the Asipa Olubadan-designate, Oba Hamidu Ajibade, Chief Nureni Adisa, and the Olubadan’s Media Aide, Chief Adeola Oloko.
Government officials in attendance included the Commissioners for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Demola Ojo, as well as those of Culture and Tourism, Women Affairs, and Information.
Others were the Chairmen of Egbeda and Ibadan South-East Local Government Councils (representing all 11 councils in Ibadanland), a member of the House of Assembly representing Ibadan South-East, the Governor’s Director-General of Protocol, and Permanent Secretaries from the Ministries of Protocol and Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.
The Olubadan coronation remains one of the most culturally significant events in Yoruba land. With a blend of tradition, spirituality, and intellectual reflection, the 44th coronation is expected to draw indigenes and dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond.
