Former President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that he depends on rental income from one of his two houses in Kaduna State to sustain his daily needs, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in public service.
Speaking during an All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus meeting held on January 25 at the Presidential Banquet Hall, Katsina State Government House, Buhari reiterated his commitment to integrity, stating that he refrained from amassing wealth illegally during his tenure.
Addressing the gathering in Hausa, the former president revealed that he owns only three houses: one in Daura, Katsina State, and two in Kaduna State. He shared that one of his Kaduna properties has been rented out, and the income supports his upkeep.
“After my eight years as a civilian president, I have only three houses—one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I rented one of the Kaduna houses, and that is where I get money to feed myself,” he said.
Buhari highlighted the complexities of governing a diverse nation like Nigeria, adding that many citizens underestimate the challenges of leadership.
“Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, but most Nigerians do not realize this. You cannot fully understand the complexities of leadership until you find yourself in the position of managing this nation,” he remarked.
Reflecting on life after office, the former president noted that he is healthier and more relaxed now.
“I look much better and healthier now than when I was president. People who see me now always say I look better,” Buhari said with a sense of relief.
He further asserted that no one could accuse him of corruption, stressing that he served the country with integrity throughout his presidency.
The APC caucus meeting was part of preparations for the upcoming local government elections in Katsina State.
