The United Kingdom has issued approximately 300,000 new visas to Nigerians over the past few years, according to Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Montgomery countered perceptions that the UK’s immigration policies are overly restrictive.
He emphasized that Nigeria has been a key beneficiary of the UK’s visa policies, particularly following the country’s exit from the European Union.
“I have to challenge this narrative,” Montgomery stated. “In the last couple of years, the UK has granted around 300,000 new visas to Nigerians. This figure surpasses the number of visas granted by any other country in its relationship with Nigeria.”
Highlighting the positive impact of post-Brexit visa regulations, the High Commissioner noted that Nigerians have played a crucial role in various sectors of the UK economy, particularly in social care.
“The trends have been really positive post-Brexit,” he added. “Nigerians have made incredibly important contributions, especially in critical areas like the social care sector.”
Montgomery’s remarks underscore the significant role of Nigerian migrants in strengthening ties between the two nations while addressing misconceptions about UK immigration policies.
